Understanding the AS400 Green Screen

The AS400 Green Screen, also known as the IBM i green screen or 5250 terminal, is a text-based user interface that was commonly used for interacting with IBM’s AS400 system. Initially, it was designed to display green text on a black background, hence the name. This interface relies on command-line input and does not include the graphical user interface (GUI) features seen in modern systems. While the green screen may appear outdated, it remains integral to many AS400 operations, offering fast and efficient access to critical business applications. Despite the rise of web-based and GUI interfaces, many organizations continue to use the green screen for legacy applications due to its reliability and minimal resource requirements.
