RPG on AS400
RPG (Report Program Generator) is a programming language traditionally used on the AS400 (now known as IBM i) systems. Originally developed in the 1960s, RPG has evolved to become a robust, high-performance language tailored for business applications on the IBM i platform. It is particularly well-suited for handling complex financial, manufacturing, and inventory systems, providing tight integration with the platform’s database (DB2) and operating system (OS/400). RPG’s ability to process large volumes of transactions with high reliability makes it a preferred choice for enterprises using AS400. Modern versions, such as RPG IV, have incorporated more contemporary programming features, including free-format coding, which makes it more accessible to developers. RPG remains a key component in maintaining and upgrading legacy systems on AS400 platforms, ensuring their continued relevance in today’s business environment.
